From Belgium to Canada, travellers pledge not to fly

If you knew that a return flight New York – Amsterdam is the CO2 equivalent of one thousand Big Macs, would you fly? The FlightFree 2020 campaign aims to make not flying as socially accepted as vegetarian eating or non-smoking. Travellers worldwide are asked to sign a pledge: stay on the ground next year if 100,000 others sign up too.

How the Dutch are closing their prisons

Walking along the corridors of the creative work space that is housed inside the Wolvenplein prison, reminders of the building's long history are everywhere. For 158 years, this was where the central Dutch city of Utrecht sent its prisoners. Five years ago – along with almost half of the country's prisons – it shut down.

The ‘Brexodus’ of Europeans from the UK

Joris Zwart lived in England for 20 years before he decided to move his family back to his native Netherlands. The ongoing uncertainty caused by Brexit and the birth of his son had called into question whether their future remained in the United Kingdom. "We were fairly settled in the U.K., but once we saw the referendum outcome was Leave, we knew it was time to seriously consider our options." Zwart isn't alone.
